Lespedeza

As we near the end of summer the Lespedeza begins to come into its own. The flowered fronds waft gently in the breeze and shine out in the sunshine.

Chateau Milandes

Chateau Milandes, once the home of Josephine Baker is open to the public. In addition to the exhibition of costumes and the wonderful falconry displays there is now the beautiful garden. Originally Charles Claverie commissioned Jules Vacherot, head gardener of Paris to design the garden which is now the subject of extensive renovation.

Welcome rain

This week has seen some rain which has been very welcome. The grass had turned brown and the plants were wilting under the intense sun. It took just a couple of nights rain (fortunately not during the day) to change everything.  

Helleborus

This is the first year I have tried growing hellebores outside the main house during winter and I must say I am very pleased with them. They certainly brighten up the two stone pots and have withstood the cold.

Sunflowers bloom in the Dordogne

This is a wonderful time of year. Despite the drought the fields and gardens continue to bloom and both traveler and resident can’t help but be delighted by the colourful fields of sunflowers.

Star of Zanzibar

The beautiful ‘Star of Zanzibar’ tropical water-lily we bought from the famed Latour-Marliac nursery has flowered wondefully this summer. Now in its second year it has made good growth in the new larger tub so hopefully next year will be ready to move into the newly puchased water-trough.  

Potager in central Cahors

I love the way the French will plant a potager whenever and wherever possible. This one can be found in central Cahors outside one of buildings that must have been connected to the church.  

Topiary in Autumn

The Dordogne valley is a beautiful place to visit in May. The countryside is lush, the flower markets are in full swing and the sun is warm enough to enjoy outdoor living.
